Overview

This project will increase the safety of the Camino Verde road crossing of the Black Wash. Because of the nature of the soil, the existing wash was highly incised which led to deep channeling and a rather abrupt roadway crossing. Sheet flooding up to a foot in depth can be expected within this entire section of Camino Verde, and even in the smallest of floods, the depth within the road crossing became impassable.

Since the road was closed to all non-emergency traffic, it was essential to keep the closure time to a minimum. A precast arch structure was chosen for the culvert crossing due to its shortened length of installation time. Rather than using an ADOT box culvert which would take between four and six weeks to finish, a precast structure was in place and backfilled, ready for traffic in less than two weeks.

Utility relocation plans and improvement plans cost roughly $60,000. Project construction costs were $490,000 with emergency road maintenance and detours running another $24,000.
